Angel Reese gave the Atlanta Dream an injury scare just days before the 2026 WNBA playoffs when she was hit in the face by New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu during Atlanta’s regular-season finale.
Reese left the game and did not play in the second half, but the immediate news was encouraging. Dream coach Karl Smesko said afterward that Reese had been medically cleared and could have returned if Atlanta needed her.
That makes her early exit appear to have been precautionary rather than the result of an injury expected to keep her out of the postseason.

Reese was injured late in the second quarter of the Dream’s 83-65 victory over the Liberty on Wednesday, September 23.
With 5.6 seconds remaining before halftime, Reese was defending Sabrina Ionescu near the perimeter. As Ionescu moved with the ball, her arm caught Reese directly in the face.

Why Was Sabrina Ionescu Called For A Flagrant Foul?
A Flagrant 1 foul is assessed for contact that officials determine is unnecessary.
After reviewing Ionescu’s contact with Reese, referees determined that the blow to Reese’s face met the standard for a Flagrant 1.
The play did not result in Ionescu being ejected. A Flagrant 1 gives the fouled player two free throws and gives that player’s team possession of the ball.
The contact appeared inadvertent rather than an intentional strike, but the location and force of the contact were enough for officials to upgrade the foul after replay review. [Yahoo Sports]
Did Angel Reese Return To The Game?
Reese briefly returned from the locker room to shoot the two free throws awarded following the flagrant foul. She made both attempts and then went back to the locker room.
She did not play during the second half.
Reese later returned to Atlanta’s bench with 6:19 remaining in the third quarter, another positive indication that the injury was not considered serious enough to require her to immediately leave the arena for further treatment. [AP]

Atlanta has not announced a significant diagnosed injury resulting from the play.
The most important update came directly from Dream coach Karl Smesko after the game. Smesko said Reese had been cleared to return.
“She was cleared, but we made a decision that it would be smart for her to sit out the second half.”

Smesko’s statement that Reese had already been medically cleared during Wednesday’s game is the strongest evidence concerning her postseason status. Atlanta has not announced that Reese suffered an injury expected to sideline her.
However, an official Game 1 designation will come from Atlanta’s playoff injury reporting. Until that is released, it would be premature to describe Reese as officially confirmed to play.
